Stress Fractures

A stress fracture is a hairline crack in bone caused by repetitive load rather than by a single injury. It develops when microdamage from repeated impact accumulates faster than the bone's own remodeling cycle can adapt to it, most often in the weight-bearing bones of the lower leg and foot, such as the tibia, the metatarsals, and the navicular. The characteristic sign is pinpoint pain over one spot on the bone that worsens with weight-bearing activity and eases with rest, often with local tenderness and swelling. What Causes Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures develop when accumulated microtrauma outpaces the bone's ongoing remodeling cycle. Repetitive high-impact activity such as running, military training, jumping, and dancing applies cumulative force to the same bones, and rapid increases in training volume or intensity leave bone less time to adapt to the load it is carrying. Biomechanical factors can concentrate stress unevenly: gait mechanics, footwear, training surface, and muscle fatigue that leaves force less evenly distributed across the limb. Low bone mineral density reduces the load a bone can absorb before microdamage builds up.
