Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency is a term that means your body doesn’t have enough vitamin D. The body uses Vitamin D for bone, nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and immune system health. Without it, your bones can begin to break down and other metabolic issues may arise. How Medical Foods Can Help

What causes Vitamin D deficiency?
Vitamin D deficiency can stem from various factors. Limited exposure to sunlight, which triggers the body’s production of vitamin D, is a primary cause. Dietary insufficiency is another factor, as vitamin D is found in few foods like fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and egg yolks. Older adults and those with restricted diets may not obtain enough through food sources alone. Obesity can also contribute, as vitamin D is stored in fat cells, potentially reducing its circulating levels. Additionally, individuals with darker skin tones may require more sun exposure to produce sufficient vitamin D due to melanin’s interference with sunlight absorption. Medical conditions like celiac disease or certain medications can impair vitamin D absorption, while geographical location and genetic factors can also play a role.
